Our work

Impact

We are instrumental in recording violations during the Syrian conflict. By collaborating with international bodies, we aid inquiries and support legal actions. Our detailed analyses and resources advance justice and uphold accountability.

Contribution to international investigative bodies

We play a central role in documenting crimes in the Syrian conflict. By working with international mechanisms, it supports investigations and contributes to prosecutions. The provision of comprehensive analysis and resources promotes justice and accountability.

SRC team has been playing  an important role in advancing accountability for crimes committed during the protracted conflict in Syria, particularly through the use of comprehensive documentation and investigative materials.

Leveraging resources provided by the SRC, the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism on Syria have produced three key analytical reports focused on detention-related crimes in Syria. These reports have been shared with different national authorities, aiding the preparation of judicial proceedings related to core international crimes committed in Syria since March 2011.

Through collaboration with the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism on Syria, SRC has shared 14 reports, interview notes, and additional materials with investigators and prosecutors from five different jurisdictions. These resources have been instrumental in advancing 23 national investigations into crimes committed by both the Syrian government and ISIL (ISIS) in Syria.

SRC has facilitated contact with primary and secondary sources for the United Nations Commission of Inquiry (CoI) on Syria. The information provided by the SRC has been instrumental in the Commission’s own efforts, particularly in mapping military actors and advancing investigations into violations of children’s rights. By offering detailed, accurate data, the SRC has significantly contributed to the documentation of serious violations of international human rights law across the country.  This contribution has enhanced the overall understanding of the situation on the ground, supporting efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and to advance justice for victims.

Syria Conflict Reporter, phase I and II

SRC aimed to provide policymakers and mediators with actionable insights into the dynamics of the Syrian conflict by analyzing trends in violence, ceasefire violations, humanitarian access and situations of the displaced communities. It sought to support peacebuilding and mediation efforts by offering evidence-based analyses, early warning systems to prevent escalations, and accountability mechanisms for human rights violations.

The project focused on conflict mapping across the country, assessing the impact of violence, and understanding the roles of key stakeholders to provide comprehensive situational analysis. It delivered periodic briefings, thematic reports, and real-time alerts to inform decision-making while translating these insights into actionable policy recommendations. This work resulted in  enhanced awareness of ground realities, improved capacity to address crises, and strengthened peacebuilding initiatives that target root causes. Through its collaborative approach and use of innovative tools, SRC served as a vital resource towards sustainable peace efforts in Syria.

Pathways for Justice in Syria, phase I and II

SRC designed and implemented an initiative in Idlib to provide trauma-informed care for former women detainees, helping them recover from the emotional and psychological impacts of detention and conflict. The program offered tailored counselling and individual therapy to address trauma and promote emotional well-being, with the goal of restoring self-worth, resilience, and hope, and supporting personal recovery and reintegration into society.

The initiative fostered empowerment and resilience by providing women with practical skills, vocational training, and economic opportunities to rebuild their lives and regain independence. Community reintegration efforts aimed to reduce stigma and promote acceptance through dialogues and awareness campaigns that supported social cohesion. By tackling these challenges collectively, the project sought to create pathways for reconciliation and peacebuilding, ensuring former women detainees were recognized as active contributors to their communities’ recovery and stability.

Advancing housing, land and property rights

SRC conducted a survey involving 20 refugee families from a region in Idlib to assess their ability to claim their HLP rights in Syria. This survey provided valuable insights into the barriers these families face in securing their housing, land, and property, which is essential for their return, recovery, and long-term stability. SRC analysis gave special consideration to the experiences of vulnerable groups, ensuring that their unique needs and challenges were identified and addressed.

The SRC's recommendations emphasize a people-centred approach, advocating that any policies or measures aimed at addressing HLP violations must prioritize the needs and wants of the affected communities. By understanding how HLP rights were governed before and after the conflict, as well as the historical and current issues surrounding HLP, the survey enables more effective planning for a future restitution framework.

This framework will be critical for facilitating the rightful return of displaced persons, restoring property ownership, and promoting justice for those whose rights have been violated during the conflict.
